2010 LANTA Award

This project responds to context in a variety of ways. The homeowner’s intent was to reflect the ‘Canmore Cottage’ look and feel of their renovated bungalow in the landscape, with a natural but sophisticated flare. The selection and careful placement of each rundle rock step brought from a local quarry achieves this.

The dwelling is situated across the street from a natural city park, which leads down to the Bow River. The landscape design is receptive to this in the way that it opens up to this adjacent setting rather than turning its back. The careful selection of the vegetation and detail placement with particular attention to texture, colour and height further define this. This project was challenging in execution, because even though we spent time at the quarry selecting each stone, once on site, it became a reworking puzzle. To achieve some important elements such as the right heights to ensure code was met, the variation and colourings of the rock, the curvilinear and sensual approach to the entry as one transitions through the space. This project was successful in winning a LANTA landscape construction and execution award.
