Kensington Courtyard,
Kensington, Calgary, AB
2018

The construction of this inner-city infill resulted in a minimal backyard/garden space. Because of its size, every detail counts. This project is successful in that it is functional, lush, contemporary, warm and cohesive. Because most of the elements were pushed to the perimeter, the center was left open to allow for flexible lounge and dining space. The use of natural wood in a soft natural stain creates warmth to the starkness of this courtyard area contained between dwelling and garage. The natural stone with its small gaps filled with ornamental gravel adds refinement as well as visual interest. The contrasting and layering of the vegetation softens the space. This small courtyard landscape is a functional timeless classic.
